We carefully select products that align with our core values of sustainability, functionality, and versatility. Our aim is to offer excellent value with quality appliances that are accessible to all enthusiastic grillers. We believe that every product we offer should demonstrate outstanding quality and durability. Additionally, we focus on versatility because we believe it’s what sets ordinary appliances apart and makes them extraordinary.

These core values not only drive sales for retailers but also form the foundation for building strong, long-lasting relationships between businesses and consumers. We achieve our goals by collaborating with a network of retailers and outdoor kitchen specialists. Through these partnerships, we aim to inspire a new generation of outdoor cooking enthusiasts. Our vision is to help people expand their culinary knowledge and enhance their enjoyment of cooking outdoors.

My journey in the industry began with creating custom outdoor solutions. This experience instilled in me a drive to seek out unique products that were not readily available. It was this passion that ultimately led to the formation of Outdoor Appliances.

One that stands out happened about 24 years ago when I headed down to my soon-to-be missus’ neck of the woods in chilly ol’ Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was the Yuletide season, the mercury had nosedived to -33°, and I, the die-hard Saffa, had only ever kissed the sun at +33°. But did I let a small case of frostbite deter me? Not a snowball’s chance in a braai! I decided to go mano a mano with Mother Nature. Soon after firing up the gas Weber on the deck, my Moose Head beer bottle neck started freezing. Amazed, I walked over to the deck sliding door where I held up my nearly frozen beer for all to see. As I peered through the glass, I was met with my future in-laws faces, painted with expressions that said – “Yep, our future in-law’s definitely got a few Springboks loose in the top paddock!” It was a great braai, a bit chilly, but the heat from the grill saved my face. I was super chuffed.

Back when I was just a knee-high sprout, too pint-sized to even peek over the braai grid, one thing etched its mark on my taste memory – the Cape Sarmies – our family’s equivalent of edible fireworks, sizzling over the coals. Picture this – a symphony of molten cheese, slivers of onion cut so thin they’re almost see – through, juicy tomato slices, and a secret ingredient of your choosing, all sandwiched between two pieces of bread. And the pièce de résistance? It’s all trussed up with butcher’s twine, like a delicious secret waiting to be unwrapped! Turns out, grilling this bundle of yum is like a rite of passage for any budding braai maestro, a crash course in tempering the flames and mastering patience. Nail it, and you’re rewarded with an eruption of flavours that would make even the sternest food critic do a happy dance. Mess it up, and let’s just say it’s a culinary faux pas that’ll stick with you. That’s the sizzling, smoky ballet of the braai for you!

In the hall of fame of my favourite grilling fare, a burly, dry-aged, two-inch thick Cote de Boeuf reigns supreme. It struts onto a bed of crackling hardwood coals like a heavyweight champ taking centre stage in the ring. However, my treacherous taste buds hum a different anthem altogether. Their culinary hero? The tantalizing, spice-laden Skaap Ribbetjie. The reward? A gastronomical fireworks show that leaves you with a grin wider than a hippo in a mud bath. Trust me, it’s worth it!

Picture this – it was a starlit New Year’s Eve and yours truly had decided to give a maiden voyage to the ol’ spit rotisserie with a stuffed five-bird roast from my friendly butcher. All was going swell until the sky decided to start leaking! Like a braai matador, I abandoned my post (and roast) for a wee bit, trusting the gods of fire and metal to keep the show on the road. Imagine my shock when I returned to find that not only had the rotisserie motor turned into a little bonfire, but my quintuple-bird extravaganza was imitating a phoenix, albeit in a less majestic, more “blazing-inferno” kind of way. Well, that’s how I learnt my lesson – never, and I mean NEVER, leave your spit alone, no matter how much the heavens decide to weep. What followed was a desperate rescue mission to the last open Sainsbury’s where I grabbed their final lonely chicken like it was the last chopper out of ‘Nam. Talk about a poultry plot twist!

Following our wedding in Cape Town, my husband surprised everyone with a crayfish BBQ. The sight of everyone’s amazed expressions as roughly 120 crayfish sizzled on the grill, basted in garlic butter, is still vivid in my memory. Delicious!

My favourite BBQ item has always been marshmallows, a fondness that dates to my earliest childhood memories. The thrill of roasting my own marshmallows over a fire, after carefully selecting and sharpening the perfect stick, was nothing short of a big treat. Even as an adult, the marvel never fades. Each marshmallow roasting session sparks a lively discussion about the ideal toasting method, the perfect crispiness, and the debate of consuming it whole or peeling off the toasted exterior to re-toast the gooey centre. For me, there’s nothing quite like the delightful experience of a warm, gooey, toasted marshmallow.

My sweet tooth knows no bounds – a sweet treat from the BBQ always leaves me happy. Be it smores, a mars bar banana or a grilled peach with bourbon sauce.

Here’s one from the 1999 Rugby World Cup, the South Africa vs Australia match at Twickenham. We’d started a Potjie Pot early in the day, brimming with warthog, springbok, Kudu, and other delicacies, when a stadium official approached us to say that no fires were allowed. After a series of negotiations, we learned that we’d be permitted to cook just a few meters away, on council land. So, after the logistical back-and-forth, and hours spent nurturing our mouthwatering Dutch oven stew, one of our friends, an Australian, managed to clumsily kick over the pot, sending half our glorious stew splattering onto the ground. Classic Aussie move!

One of my favourite memories of a braai was during a pleasant summer evening with my closest friends. We gathered around the braai, enjoying the warm weather and the tantalizing aroma of grilled meats. The atmosphere was filled with fun, laughter, and storytelling. As the sun slowly set, we sat around the crackling fire, relishing deliciously cooked chicken, steaks, and burgers. It was a perfect blend of good food, great company, and unforgettable moments that created a lasting memory.

The earliest memory I have of a braai is from my childhood. I remember my parents organizing a backyard braai with some close relatives. I was fascinated by the sight of flames dancing over the coals, and the enticing smell of sizzling meat wafting through the air. I eagerly watched as my father skilfully handled the tongs, turning the meat with expertise. I also recall the anticipation building up as we waited for the food to cook, and the joy of finally tasting the deliciously charred lamb chops. It was a delightful introduction to the joy of braaiing.

My favourite thing to cook on a braai is undoubtedly a perfectly grilled steak. There’s something incredibly satisfying about searing a thick, juicy cut of beef over an open flame. The combination of the smoky flavour from the braai and the caramelized crust on the outside of the steak is simply irresistible. Pair it with some roasted potatoes and a fresh salad, and you have a mouth-watering meal that is hard to beat.

One of the funniest braai moments occurred when I had recently moved into my new apartment and decided to throw a housewarming party. I invited a few close friends, and we were determined to create the most epic braai feast ever. We purchased a small disposable BBQ and eagerly began preparing for what we thought would be a culinary masterpiece. However, in the midst of all the excitement we forgot to elevate the BBQ high enough from the wooden decking of the balcony. As we enthusiastically started grilling, the enticing aroma filled the air, but something seemed off. After about 10 minutes, we realized that the smell wasn’t coming from the braai itself but from the scorching wood underneath, which had created a searing hole in the balcony floor! Suddenly, our excitement turned into a state of panic and franticness. At that moment, it was far from funny. Looking back, however, we can now laugh about the incident

A whisky trip in Speyside. What started off with a quiet braai for two, soon ended with half the campsite joining and eating until the early hours of the morning! The following night repeat. Great fire and braais = great friendships.

As a young one it was all about the braai fire and my long stick with a marshmallow and archiving that perfect crust without loosing it in the fire. Ahh, that feeling of pride and smile, still makes me chuckle today.

Lamb Chops, done to perfection, eaten straight from the grill!

Waking up the next morning with the braai tongs in bed.

When it was my Dad’s turn to cook, his go-to was pork sausages on the braai. We had to keep a close eye on him as he had a special talent for ‘accidentally’ flinging a few sausages overboard, conveniently landing right in the eagerly awaiting mouths of our two Labradors

I can’t even pinpoint one, it feels as though it has simply always been a part of my life! My earliest memories in general are filled with swimming, laughter, and the smell of smoke swirling around the grill.

My absolute favourite is a freshly caught snoek grilled with a buttery and apricot jammy glaze. There’s nothing like it!

There’s too many to recall! Some of my favourite times would have to be the post night-out braais. We would often all cram into a friend’s house and some brave soul would grab a guitar for a tipsy serenade and we would happily nibble away at some below-par cooking, but the best friendships would be formed.

Braaiing to me always means connection, whether its my extended family all coming together, or friends enjoying a nice glass of wine around the flames, or even just myself and my husband, It’s a time for me to connect with my loved ones at a slower pace enjoying each other’s company while making delicious food.

Any type of bread: roosterbrood, braai broodjies, garlic balls and WORS.

I come from a very big family and there just doesn’t seem to be enough grilling space ever, my dad and his brothers would always joke a round and play games and the winner would be able to cook first, one time my uncle was upset by loosing and having to wait and my dad went to the bathroom and on return his half cooked meat was on the table and my uncles choice of meat on the grill.

Every braai I have had with family and friends is always memorable but my favourite part that happens at all of them is when we all gather around the fire, while the men compete with who braais the meat better and everyone plays 30 seconds and reminiscing on our memories.

The earliest memory of my childhood braais would be when I was 5 years old, sitting on my dad’s lap trying to drink his beer and everyone sitting around the fire chatting.

Absolute favourite meat would be pork chop and braaibrodtjie.

Never a dull moment at a Braai, the funniest memory I have – towards the end of the night we would make a foam bath jacuzzi which turned into slip and slide. Seeing people completely making a fool of themselves always makes me laugh.
